National Museum of Military History, Sofia

The National Museum of Military History was established on July 4, 1916. This museum has amassed an extensive collection of nearly one million artifacts pertaining to Bulgarian and European military history. It distinguishes itself in Bulgaria by offering visitors three distinct exhibitions: an outdoor showcase of military equipment, a permanent collection, and a variety of other collections.

The outdoor exhibit features over 230 military artillery, aviation equipment, and marine equipment pieces. Notably, it also includes SCUD, FROG, and SS-23 missiles and missile launchers.

The permanent collection, inaugurated in May 2005, chronicles the history of the Bulgarian military, highlighting the nation's victories, glory, and heroism from the First Bulgarian Empire to the present day. This collection spans an area of 2,400 square meters. The initial halls present Bulgarian military uniforms from the Middle Ages. The subsequent collections delve into the struggles for national independence, such as the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), which witnessed remarkable triumphs of the Bulgarian Army, securing its place in world military history.

There are also dioramas depicting Bulgarian military involvement in the First and Second World Wars, as well as other military campaigns up to the present day. Noteworthy features of these exhibits include lifelike recreations, the use of sound effects, and the unique juxtaposition of displayed items alongside artwork by renowned Bulgarian artists.
