Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad

Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad (must see)

Nehru Zoological Park is one of the largest zoological parks in India and a major place for families, students, and nature-focused visitors. Opened in 1963, it was named after Jawaharlal Nehru and was developed with spacious enclosures rather than narrow cages. It is often noted as one of the first zoos in India to move fully toward open, moated, nature-simulated enclosures, giving many animals more natural surroundings.

The zoo is home to Asiatic lions, Bengal tigers, Indian rhinos, elephants, giraffes, bears, deer, reptiles, and many bird species. In 1974, it added India’s first free-roaming Lion Safari Park, where visitors pass through secured gates before entering the safari zone. Safari rides show lions, tigers, bears, and herbivores from protected vehicles, while the nocturnal house uses reversed lighting so night-active animals are visible during visiting hours.

The park also has strong educational and conservation value. It supports breeding, rescue, and release programs for endangered and native species. It was the first zoo in India to establish an open-air park dedicated to breeding and displaying butterflies. Its dinosaur section adds simple educational interest for children.

The setting beside Mir Alam Tank gives the zoo a wide, green atmosphere and connects it with an older water landscape. The tank is known for its historic multi-arch masonry dam, built more than 200 years ago and often described as the first of its kind in the world. Its water and greenery attract many migratory birds. The zoo is large, so comfortable shoes, water, and an early visit make exploring easier.
