Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library, Osaka
The Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library, located in the Nakanoshima section of Osaka, stands as a significant cultural and educational landmark. Established in 1904 through a donation by Sumitomo Kichizaemon Tomoito, the 15th heir of the historic Sumitomo family, the library was originally named Osaka Library before being renamed to its current designation. Its establishment coincided with a period of architectural and cultural flourishing in Osaka.
Architecturally, the library is an exemplar of the Neo-baroque style, featuring a grand facade marked by four massive columns at the front entrance and three-layered stone walls that harmonize with other contemporary structures on the island. Its most distinctive architectural feature is the copper roof dome, which adds a dramatic accent to the building's profile. The initial construction was completed in 1904, with significant additions made in 1922, including the left and right wings, funded again through donations. These extensions have contributed to the building's current appearance, which has remained largely unchanged since the early 20th century.
In 1974, the main building and its wings were designated as important cultural assets by Japan, underscoring their historical and architectural significance. The library’s design was the work of Magoichi Noguchi and Yutaka Hidaka from the Sumitomo Temporary Architectural Department, reflecting the aesthetic and functional ideals of its era.
Today, the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library continues to serve the public and the academic community as one of two libraries supported by the Osaka Prefectural government. It houses a valuable collection of ancient texts, Osaka-related documents, and business-related books, drawing researchers and book enthusiasts alike. Located near Nakanoshima Park, the library offers a quiet and accessible haven for study and reflection, maintaining its role as a cherished institution even after more than a century since its foundation.
