Plaza de Toros (Bullring), Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Bullring, inaugurated in 1893 and designed by local architect Antonio Pintor Ocete, stands as an enduring symbol of the city’s late 19th-century urban and cultural development. Showcasing a unique Neo-Mudéjar style with a 32-sided polygonal layout and iron-supported construction, the venue is capable of accommodating around 6,800 spectators.
While the last bullfight occurred in December 1983 and the practice was subsequently banned in 1991, the venue embraced a second life. It hosted grand carnival events-like the annual Queen’s Gala and murga competitions-as well as boxing, wrestling, Canarian lucha, roller-skating, and concerts by international stars like Celia Cruz, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Mecano.
Today, the bullring is a Asset of Cultural Interest, with multiple redevelopment proposals-ranging from residential and commercial uses to an underground garage and cultural centre.
