Plecnikova hisa (Plecnik House), Ljubljana

Plečnikova hiša (Plečnik House) preserves the home and studio of architect Jože Plečnik, who lived here from 1921 until his death in 1957. The museum retains its original interiors, furniture, books, drawings, tools, models, and personal belongings, making the rooms appear much as they did during his lifetime. The complex includes an older family house and a cylindrical extension designed by Plečnik as his private workspace.

The drawing room, bedroom, library, workshop, and winter garden reveal both his working methods and his restrained lifestyle. Plečnik reportedly preferred hard chairs because he believed too much comfort discouraged work. He worked late with strong coffee and Drava cigarettes. Concrete pipes, reused stone, and custom-made furniture reflect his practical design approach.

The enclosed garden was an important extension of the house, planted with trees, flowers, and architectural fragments. Plečnik maintained a close friendship with neighbouring writer and priest Fran Saleški Finžgar, and shrubs rather than a solid fence separated their gardens. A modern exhibition explores Plečnik’s major projects, many of which joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021.
