Queen Street Mall, Brisbane
Queen Street Mall is the centre of activity in Brisbane’s Central Business District. Stretching across several blocks in the heart of downtown, it forms Brisbane’s predominant retail space, attracting millions of visitors each year. Hundreds of retailers are located here within a series of shopping centres and arcades, including Uptown, Wintergarden, and Queens Plaza, where prestigious Queensland boutiques stand alongside popular international fashion and retail chains.
The history of Queen Street dates back to the early years of European settlement in the 19th century, when it developed into Brisbane’s primary commercial thoroughfare. Shops, hotels, and trading houses gradually filled the street as the city grew into an important port and administrative centre. By the late 1800s, it had already become Brisbane’s main retail district. In 1982, part of the street was transformed into a pedestrian mall, officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in time for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
Beyond shopping, the mall serves as a lively social hub. A visitor information centre helps tourists plan their stay, while buskers and street performers entertain crowds throughout the day. Numerous alfresco cafés, along with food courts inside the shopping complexes, make the area a popular meeting place.
Victorian and Edwardian façades can still be spotted above modern shopfronts, and visitors should look out for the elegant Brisbane Arcade, which has retained its original 1924 charm. At the upper end of the precinct stands the historic Treasury Building; once the city's casino, it has recently been converted into a luxury hotel following the opening of the massive Queen’s Wharf integrated resort nearby.
