Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre, Vancouver

Approaching the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre from Pacific Boulevard, between Davie and Drake streets, look for the long, low brick railway building set beside a broad public plaza. Its curved shape and large industrial doors hint at its original purpose: this was once a Canadian Pacific Railway roundhouse, built in 1888 to store and service locomotives. Unlike many historic railway structures, it still stands on its original site, making it one of Vancouver’s most tangible links to the city’s railway beginnings.

Before going inside, pause in the open plaza in front of the building. This outdoor space is often used for community gatherings, markets, performances, and festivals. From here, you can clearly see how the old industrial architecture has been adapted for public use, with the former railway setting now surrounded by modern downtown towers.

Step inside and look for the large central hall, the most flexible and impressive interior space. Today it hosts exhibitions, performances, lectures, and community events, but its scale still recalls the building’s working past. Around the centre are various activity rooms, including a gymnasium, theatre, childcare area, and studios for dance, woodworking, visual arts, and other creative programs.

Back in the 1980s, the site underwent renovation, transforming into an exhibit pavilion for Expo 86, eventually evolving into the vibrant community hub we know today.

Its main historic highlight is Engine 374. Found in the dedicated display area connected to the Roundhouse, it's easy to identify as a large black steam engine with polished details and interpretive signs nearby. Engine 374 is famous for pulling the first passenger train into Vancouver in 1887, a moment that helped connect the city to the rest of Canada. The exhibit is not large, but it is free to visit and offers a close-up look at one of Vancouver’s most treasured railway artifacts.
