Royal Theater Carre, Amsterdam

Royal Theater Carre, Amsterdam

This ornate neo-Renaissance structure stands out prominently along the IJ river. Constructed with remarkable speed in 1887 to serve as the venue for Oscar Carré's circus, its façade is appropriately adorned with the likenesses of clowns and dancers. Today, it stands as the ultimate stage for Dutch folk artists and hosts a diverse array of international performances, ranging from Antony and the Johnsons to 'Carmen', with renowned touring orchestras and opera companies in between. Musicals may be presented in either Dutch or English, with many of the latter brought by touring companies from London and New York.

The theater has retained much of its original layout, featuring concentric rows encircling the ground-level seating, reminiscent of a traditional circus setting. Consequently, regardless of where you choose to sit, you are assured a superb view of the performance.
