Saint Sebaldus Church, Nuremberg

Saint Sebaldus Church is one of Nuremberg’s oldest and most important churches, standing on Albrecht Dürer Square directly in front of the Old City Hall. Together with Saint Lawrence’s Church and the Church of Our Lady, it forms the trio of great historic churches in the Old Town. Construction began in the 1230s, when the church was built as a Romanesque basilica with two choirs. The building evolved over the centuries, with two towers added in the 15th century and Baroque elements and galleries introduced during the 17th century.

The church is named after Saint Sebaldus, an 8th-century hermit and missionary who became Nuremberg’s patron saint. His remains are traditionally believed to lie within the magnificent Shrine of Saint Sebaldus, one of the church’s greatest treasures. The bronze tomb was created by Peter Vischer and his sons between 1508 and 1519, while the reliquary shrine dates to around 1397. The church also contains important works by German sculptor Veit Stoss, historic stained-glass windows, and other medieval artworks.

Saint Sebaldus Church suffered severe damage during the Second World War but was meticulously reconstructed and reconsecrated in 1957. Music has also played an important role here: an organ existed as early as the 14th century, while the main organ was built in 1440–41 by Heinrich Traxdorf.

For tourists, the church offers a fascinating combination of medieval architecture, religious art, and music. Its atmospheric interior and location beside the Old City Hall make it an essential stop in Nuremberg’s historic centre.
