Rathaus (City Hall), Nuremberg

Nuremberg’s Old City Hall is one of the city’s most important historic buildings, standing beside the Main Market Square beneath the castle hill. Construction began in 1332, and the oldest surviving part is the Great Ceremonial Hall, completed in 1340. At the time, it was the largest ceremonial hall in the region and an impressive example of Gothic architecture.

The complex was greatly expanded between 1616 and 1622 by architect Jakob Wolff, who gave the new section the appearance of an Italian Renaissance palace. Its elegant façade features three Baroque portals, while the central entrance is decorated with Nuremberg’s two coats of arms and the imperial eagle. In 1649, the city celebrated the end of the Thirty Years’ War with a grand Peace Banquet held in the City Hall.

The building was almost completely destroyed during the bombing of Nuremberg in the Second World War. It was painstakingly reconstructed and reopened in 1962, preserving its importance as a symbol of the city’s resilience.

For tourists, the City Hall offers several interesting sights. Replicas of medieval imperial regalia are displayed on the first floor, while the Medieval Dungeons in the cellar provide an atmospheric glimpse into the city’s medieval justice system. Located just beside the Main Market Square, the City Hall is also an easy stop on the way to Nuremberg Castle and other major sights of the Old Town.
