Shilparamam, Hyderabad

Shilparamam, Hyderabad (must see)

Shilparamam is a cultural crafts village established in 1992 to promote traditional Indian arts, handicrafts, and folk culture. Set within a major technology and business district, it creates a noticeable contrast between modern office towers and a landscape of village-style architecture, shaded pathways, and artisan workshops. It recreated rural life while giving artisans space to show and sell their work. Mud walls, lime finishes, and tiled roofs help keep many huts naturally cool.

The crafts bazaar is the heart of the village, featuring hundreds of permanent and seasonal stalls representing different regions of India. Visitors can browse handloom textiles, pottery, wood carvings, metalwork, paintings, jewellery, leather products, and decorative handicrafts. Artisans and stalls change during fairs, especially around Sankranti and Dussehra, when performances, workshops, and food stalls add more activity.

Beyond shopping, Shilparamam serves as a cultural venue. Its open-air amphitheatre regularly hosts folk dances, classical music performances, theatre productions, and cultural programs. The rural museum presents scenes of traditional village life through models, tools, and domestic objects, while the sculpture park displays works by contemporary and traditional artists. The Prakriti Raga Rock Gallery, curated by Subrata Basu, highlights ancient granite formations that resemble animals and other shapes.

Visitors can also enjoy landscaped gardens, an aviary, and a man-made lake where boating is available. The Night Bazaar extends activity into the evening, offering shopping, food, and entertainment in a different atmosphere from the daytime market. Combining crafts, performance spaces, traditional architecture, and natural rock formations, Shilparamam provides insight into India's artistic traditions while remaining closely connected to the surrounding urban environment.
