Statue of Hugo de Groot, Delft

The Statue of Hugo de Groot in Delft is a tribute to one of the Netherlands’ most influential thinkers. Better known internationally as Hugo Grotius, he was a 17th-century jurist, philosopher, and theologian whose writings laid the foundation for modern international law. Born in Delft in 1583, Grotius gained fame for his sharp intellect at an early age, publishing scholarly works while still a teenager. His ideas on the freedom of the seas and the rights of nations to self-govern helped shape global legal traditions that continue to resonate today.

The bronze statue, created by Dutch sculptor Frans Stracké and unveiled in 1886, stands proudly on the Markt, the city’s main square.
