Stavanger City Museum, Stavanger

Stavanger City Museum, Stavanger

Stavanger Museum, founded in 1877, is a hub of natural and cultural history. The museum’s extensive collections are spread across several departments, including zoology and cultural history, the latter of which also oversees the royal residence, Ledaal.

The museum network includes the Stavanger Museum of Natural History, Stavanger Maritime Museum, Norwegian Children's Museum, Norwegian Printing Museum, Stavanger School Museum, Stavanger Art Museum, and the Norwegian Canning Museum.

Originally, the Stavanger Museum of Natural History (formerly the Department of Zoology) was a cornerstone of the museum, tasked with collecting local wildlife as well as "exotic" species donated by sailors and travelers. From 1918, it became a center for ornithological research, with the Revtangen Ornithological Station playing a key role in bird ringing and migration studies since its establishment in 1937.

The Norwegian Printing Museum, established in 1991 and officially opened in 1993, highlights Stavanger's significant role in the Norwegian printing industry. Located in a renovated 1913 canning stock on Bjergsted, the museum preserves the history of printing in the region.

The Stavanger School Museum, formerly known as Vestlandske Skolemuseum, is housed in a 1920s schoolhouse in Hillevåg and opened in 1925. It explores the educational history of Rogaland through interactive exhibits, including role-playing and period-appropriate attire.

The Norwegian Canning Museum, founded in 1975, is situated in a preserved cannery in Gamle Stavanger. The museum showcases the history of the canning industry through exhibitions of machinery, tools, photographs, labels, and advertisements, with the oldest parts of the building dating back to 1841. Canning production at this site continued from 1916 until the mid-1950s.
