The Three Legged Mare, York

The Three-Legged Mare, affectionately known locally as the "Wonky Donkey," is a cherished pub situated in the heart of York. Opened in 2001 and owned by York Brewery, this venue is one of three pubs the brewery has in the city. The pub's name, and one of its distinctive features-a replica of the three-man hanging gallows in its beer garden-draws from the historical Tyburn gallows, which consisted of three vertical beams connected by horizontal beams for hanging.

As a modern yet historically inclined establishment, the pub maintains a lively atmosphere with a light and welcoming interior that combines traditional and contemporary elements. It's popular for its proximity to local attractions like the York Minster and is a favored spot for pre-theatre drinks due to its location near a theatre.

The Three-Legged Mare is renowned for its selection of real ales, featuring up to nine ales at any time, including the exclusive and beloved Wonkey Donkey brew. Among the ales, the award-winning Centurion's Ghost Ale stands out as York’s strongest beer, inspired by the legendary sightings of Roman troops at the Treasurer's House. The pub also offers a wide range of excellent bitters.
