The White Star Pub, Liverpool

The White Star is one of Mathew Street’s longest-running pubs, with a history dating back to 1880. Named after the White Star Line shipping company, best known for the Titanic, it occupies a traditional Victorian building and has plenty of Liverpool memorabilia on display. It's a lively place on matchdays, when football fans crowd around the bar, but at other times, it’s a fairly quiet local boozer. And, of course, it has a connection to the Beatles.

The White Star is closely associated with the band's early days, particularly with their performances at the nearby Cavern Club. Back then, music promoter Allan Williams and Cavern Club DJ Bob Wooler would sometimes pay musicians here after their gigs. The Beatles were among those who came to collect their money. Head towards the back room, where you will find the famous "Beatles back wall," decorated with photographs and memorabilia recalling those early years.

For visitors wanting to experience a traditional English pub, The White Star is a good place to start. The staff are friendly, the ales are well kept, and the atmosphere is refreshingly down-to-earth. You'll often find tourists sharing the bar with locals, some of whom may have their own stories or memories of The Beatles to share.
