Tobacco 001 - Cultural Centre, Museum and Galleries, Ljubljana

Tobacco 001 is a cultural centre within a former tobacco factory complex dating from the late 19th century. The building itself was constructed in 1885 as a bathhouse and washroom, where workers could remove tobacco dust and strong odours before returning home. It later served as a canteen and factory archive before being adapted for cultural use.

The factory once employed as many as 2,500 people, most of them women known locally as “cigar ladies.” Their precise hand-rolling skills were valued in cigar production, and the stable income offered by the factory contributed to women’s economic independence and the development of labour rights. Some hand-rolled cigars were reportedly supplied to the imperial court of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Today, the centre contains galleries, museum displays, studios, and spaces for workshops and performances. Exhibits explore contemporary art, photography, design, architecture, and industrial history. A large cigarette-making machine recalls the production of Filter 57, one of the best-known cigarette brands in former Yugoslavia. The entrance is marked by a bronze statue of a female tobacco worker, created in 1971. Brick walls, large windows, steel elements, and preserved machinery retain the character of the former factory.
