Tomb of King Tutankhamun, Luxor

The tomb of Tutankhamun, also known by its tomb number, KV62, serves as the final resting place of Tutankhamun, a pharaoh of ancient Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, located in the Valley of the Kings. Comprising four chambers along with an entrance staircase and corridor, this tomb is relatively modest compared to others of its era, potentially repurposed from a non-royal tomb to accommodate Tutankhamun after his untimely demise. Despite its size, the tomb was filled with an array of funerary objects and personal belongings, densely packed due to limited space. While robbers breached the tomb shortly after Tutankhamun's burial, much of its contents remained intact. Situated at a low position within the valley, debris concealed its entrance, safeguarding it from extensive looting during later periods.

Discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter and his team, the tomb gained worldwide attention due to its wealth of burial goods, sparking a media frenzy and establishing it as one of Egyptology's most famous finds. The supposed curse associated with the death of Carter's patron, the Earl of Carnarvon, during the excavation further fueled public fascination. Though offering limited insights into Tutankhamun's reign and the preceding Amarna Period, the discovery shed light on ancient Egyptian material culture and burial practices. Tutankhamun's fame soared, with artifacts such as his iconic golden funerary mask becoming emblematic of ancient Egypt's artistic legacy.

While many of the tomb's artifacts now reside in museums like the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, Tutankhamun's mummy and sarcophagus remain on display within the tomb itself. Over the years, flooding and tourist traffic have caused damage, prompting the construction of a replica burial chamber nearby to alleviate pressure on the original site.
