Volkskundemuseum, Vienna

The Volkskundemuseum Wien, also known as the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, is a museum that focuses on the cultural history and the historical and contemporary everyday culture of Europe. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration between different academic fields and art forms, creating a space for the exploration and discussion of societal issues.

The museum's collections originated from the former Habsburg crown lands and have grown over time, now comprising over 100,000 three-dimensional objects and more than 200,000 photographs and graphics. These collections continue to expand.

Established in 1896 by Michael Haberlandt and Wilhelm Hein, the museum has been located in the Schönborn Garden Palace in Vienna's Josefstadt district since 1917. As a cultural institution with roots in the 19th century, the museum has evolved and adapted to the changing academic, political, and societal landscapes of the 20th century.

Why You Should Visit:
Great collection of native art & everyday objects. Especially strongly represented here is anything made of wood – from cabinets and tables to Austria's very famous (and colorful) wood carvings.

Tip:
The museum café is especially attractive and has a wonderful outside garden to sip your tea or wine in warmer weather.
