Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus

The Wexner Center for the Arts is a dynamic multidisciplinary venue dedicated to advancing contemporary art across visual, media, and performing arts. Opened in 1989, it serves as a public gallery and laboratory for artistic exploration rather than a traditional museum, as it does not collect art. However, it inherited a collection of approximately 3,000 works from the University Gallery of Fine Arts, which continues to play a role in its programming.

Designed by Peter Eisenman, the Wexner Center's architecture is characterized by a deconstructivist approach, with a design that challenges conventional forms. The building features a white metal grid and mismatched street grids, creating an unconventional layout that reflects Eisenman's theory that art should engage with its environment. The center includes galleries, a film and video theater, and a performance space. Its unique design has garnered significant architectural recognition, including the American Institute of Architects' National Honor Award.

The center is known for its rotating exhibitions, which have showcased influential contemporary artists like Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol, and Julie Taymor. It also houses a renowned film and video program, screening over 180 films annually, including independent, international, and experimental works. In addition, the Wexner Center supports a diverse range of performing arts, hosting innovative productions by renowned artists such as Bill T. Jones and Anne Bogart.
