Zentrum fur Kinder (Children's Hospital), Heidelberg

The Zentrum für Kinder- und Jugendmedizin was established on July 1, 1860, making it one of Germany’s oldest paediatric facilities. Professor Theodor von Dusch opened the hospital in a rented six-bed apartment and advertised for patients in local newspapers. Grand Duchess Luise of Baden became its patron in 1864, and the institution was later called the Luisenheilanstalt. During its first 50 years, donations and charity bazaars provided much of its financial support.

The present Angelika-Lautenschläger-Klinik opened in 2008. It was named after the wife of university supporter Manfred Lautenschläger, whose foundation contributed €13.8 million towards its construction. The five-level complex uses glazed passages, courtyards and natural light. An indoor link to the women’s clinic allows newborns needing intensive care to be transferred directly.

The hospital also has an important scientific legacy. Paediatrician Ernst Moro began working here in 1911 and became associated with the infant startle response now called the Moro reflex. Moro’s carrot soup helped treat severe childhood diarrhoea. The centre now offers specialised care, playrooms, a hospital school, a library and family accommodation. Visitors should respect patient privacy and access restrictions.
