Zum Guldenen Stern Restaurant, Nuremberg

Zum Guldenen Stern Restaurant, Nuremberg

Zum Guldenen Stern is one of Nuremberg’s most historic restaurants and is renowned for its traditional Nuremberg sausages. The building dates back to around 1380, and the restaurant was first mentioned in 1419. It is considered Nuremberg’s oldest restaurant to have operated continuously at the same location, making it an especially interesting stop for visitors exploring the Old Town.

The restaurant’s traditional architecture adds to its appeal. Inside, low wood-panelled ceilings, family-style seating, and a cosy fireplace create an atmosphere that recalls Nuremberg’s medieval past. However, the main reason to visit is the food.

The house speciality is the famous Nuremberg sausage, made by local butchers according to traditional recipes. The sausages are prepared fresh rather than pre-cooked and grilled daily over an open beechwood fire, giving them their distinctive flavour and smoky aroma. They are typically served with traditional accompaniments, including sauerkraut and potato salad.

Other dishes continue the restaurant’s emphasis on local traditions. The Wehr family prepares the barrel-fermented sauerkraut, while the homemade potato salad is made with locally sourced potatoes. For dessert, apple strudel is a popular choice.

For tourists, Zum Guldenen Stern offers more than a meal: it is an opportunity to experience one of Nuremberg’s oldest culinary traditions in an authentic historic setting.

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Nuremberg’s association with Adolf Hitler and National Socialism is one of the darkest chapters in the city’s history. Although Nuremberg is known for its medieval architecture and storybook appearance, few German cities are as closely intertwined with the Nazi legacy. Hitler referred to it as the “City of the Party Rallies” and regarded it as a model for the ideal German city.
