Situated between the desert and the sea, Perth is one of the world’s most isolated cities. It is 2,104 kilometres (1,307 miles) away from the next population centre with more than 100,000 people (being the South Australian capital of Adelaide).

The city was founded in 1829 and has seen constant change since then, which is reflected in both the architecture and the personality of the city. In recent decades Perth has benefited from a significant natural resources boom, as the mining, petroleum, and agricultural export industries of Western Australia have brought prosperity, development and a fast-growing population despite the geographical isolation.

The bustling city centre is very smart, with many modern office buildings. Perth is increasingly cosmopolitan but still retains a hint of its frontier town roots.
