Historic District - Business District of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina (B)

The Business District is located right in between all of the other neighborhoods of Charleston’s Historic District. Along these streets there are numerous shops and restaurants to enjoy, with historic churches and buildings speckled in between. The ebb and flow of economic conditions effects building use. Creative purpose is a hallmark of Charleston where you will be able to spot several buildings that have had varied uses over the years, such as once a restaurant and now a church.

The Charleston Library Society is thought to be the third library established in the United States. It was organized in 1748 by a group of young men who wished to keep up with the scientific and philosophical issues of the day, and hoped to ”save their descendants from sinking into savagery.” To promote education in the 1770s, it funded the establishment of the College of Charleston. The Society collected scientific instruments and materials that promoted the study of natural history and became the foundation of the Charleston Museum.  ......
