Upper Town Walk, Zagreb

Upper Town Walk (Self Guided), Zagreb

Zagreb’s Gornji Grad (Upper Town) is the capital city's historic district, encompassing the medieval hilltop settlements of Kaptol and Gradec. Stroll along cobblestone streets, visit medieval squares and participate in the lively café culture that have made Upper Town one of the most inviting places in Zagreb.

The network of little streets is ripe for exploration, and they lead the visitor to restaurants, bars, cafés and historical sights. Saunter down the leafy walkway of the Strossmayer Promenade where the old city walls once stood. See the dramatic Stone gate (Kamenita vrata) that used to be one of four gates connecting Lower Town to Upper Town. Today, it houses a shrine to the Virgin Mary, and many people come here to light a candle.

Visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, a quirky place with exhibits related to the theme of failed relationships. Stop by one of Upper Town's principle attractions, St. Mark's Church, the parish church of old Zagreb. It sits on St. Mark's Square, and experts think that it dates back to around the 13th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city and features an easily recognizable colorful roof. Marvel at the Gothic architecture, the Romanesque window and the south portal, which is decorated with sculptures of religious figures.
