The name Stratford-upon-Avon tells you quite a lot about the town. “Strat” comes from an Old English word for a street or road, itself derived from the Latin “strata.” A “ford” is a shallow place where a river can be crossed, while “Avon” comes from an ancient Celtic word meaning simply “river.” String them all together, rather like sausages, and you get Stratford-upon-Avon. The old crossing near the site is still there and is now spanned by Clopton Bridge.

The settlement began developing in the Saxon period, and by the late 12th century Stratford was becoming an established trading center. In 1196, the lord of the manor obtained a charter from King Richard I (widely known as the Lionheart), allowing a weekly market. By the 13th century, the town had shops, craftsmen, and the influential Guild of the Holy Cross.

Stratford remained relatively compact for centuries, which helped preserve many of its historic buildings that you can still see today. A number of them stand along what is now known as Stratford’s Historic Spine, a walking route through the heart of the old town.

It begins on Henley Street, at Shakespeare’s Birthplace, where William Shakespeare was born in 1564. From there, continue toward High Street, where timber-framed buildings include Harvard House. Carry on into Chapel Street to reach Shakespeare’s New Place, the site of the substantial house where Shakespeare lived after returning from London.

From Chapel Street, proceed toward Church Street. Along the way you will pass the Guildhall, where the young Shakespeare is believed to have attended school, before reaching Hall’s Croft, once the home of his daughter Susanna and her husband, Dr. John Hall. Keep going toward the river, and you will arrive at Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare was baptized and, many years later, buried.

There is plenty more to discover around Stratford, including the homes associated with Shakespeare’s family, old pubs, museums, and the surrounding Warwickshire countryside. But the presence that has drawn visitors here for generations is Shakespeare himself.

So, as you follow this self-guided walk, look beyond the monuments and old buildings. You are tracing the streets of the town that shaped Shakespeare’s life—and discovering the places where his story began, unfolded, and finally came to an end.
