Art Museum of the Americas, Washington D.C.

The Art Museum of the Americas (AMA), situated in Washington, D.C., holds the distinction of being the United States' inaugural museum primarily dedicated to showcasing contemporary and modern art from Latin America and the Caribbean. Its formal establishment dates back to 1976 when the Organization of American States (OAS) founded it under the name "Museum of Modern Art of Latin America." The AMA boasts a notable permanent collection featuring renowned artists like Carlos Cruz-Diez, Candido Portinari, Pedro Figari, Fernando de Szyszlo, Amelia Peláez, and Alejandro Obregón.

The Art Museum of the Americas was officially founded by a resolution from the OAS Permanent Council, coinciding with the United States Bicentennial celebration. It was housed in the former official residence of the OAS Secretary General, a structure designed in the Spanish Colonial style by architect Paul Cret in 1912.

Initially, the permanent collection comprised around 250 artworks, but over the next 25 years, it expanded significantly, encompassing over 2,000 pieces of painting, sculpture, installations, photography, and drawing, spanning from the early 20th century onward. In addition to its impressive permanent collection, which primarily features art from the Caribbean and Latin America, AMA regularly hosts temporary and special exhibitions representing various regions. The museum also offers educational seminars and lectures delivered by guest speakers.

Furthermore, the Art Museum of the Americas has broadened its offerings to include evening events like "Art After Dark," featuring avant-garde music, video art, performances, and installation pieces.
