Baluarte de San Diego, Manila

Baluarte de San Diego is one of the oldest and best-preserved fortifications within the historic walled city of Intramuros. Built on the southwestern corner of the city's defenses, the bastion dates to the late 16th century and was designed to protect Spanish Manila from attacks approaching from Manila Bay. Although it was originally intended to form part of a much larger fortress that was never completed, the structure remains an outstanding example of Spanish colonial military engineering.

The bastion has a distinctive history and architecture. Construction began in 1587 with a circular watchtower. During the 1590s, the tower was incorporated into a larger, spade-shaped bastion, creating the unusual "fort within a fort" that survives today. Over the centuries the structure was altered several times, changes that were later documented by the Spanish official Antonio de Morga and confirmed through archaeological excavations carried out between 1979 and 1982.

Today, visitors can walk along the stone ramparts, explore the circular inner tower, and enjoy views across Intramuros and the surrounding city. Informational displays explain the evolution of Manila's fortifications, while the restored masonry reveals the ingenuity of Spanish military design. Surrounding the fort is a landscaped park featuring manicured gardens, fountains, monuments, and shaded pathways that provide a welcome retreat from the busy streets outside the walls.
