Chifley Tower, Sydney

Chifley Tower is one of Sydney’s most prominent commercial skyscrapers, standing 244 metres tall in the city’s central business district. Completed in 1992, it was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in collaboration with Travis Partners, combining modern engineering with refined architectural detailing. The building’s granite and glass façade reflects Sydney’s skyline and harbour light, while its stepped form and vertical emphasis give it a distinctive presence among the city’s high-rises. The tower is named after Ben Chifley, Australia’s Prime Minister from 1945 to 1949, honouring his role in the nation’s postwar development.

Inside, Chifley Tower houses premium office spaces, with a soaring lobby lined in marble and granite that creates an atmosphere of quiet formality. The tower’s design focuses on light and symmetry, using high-performance glass to frame panoramic views of the harbour and surrounding city. At street level, the adjoining Chifley Plaza provides an elegant retail and dining concourse that connects the building to nearby streets and pedestrian arcades.

Architecturally, the tower represents Sydney’s shift toward an international corporate style in the late 20th century. Its design draws subtle inspiration from Art Deco geometry, visible in the setbacks near the crown and the sculptural top that completes the skyline view from many parts of the city.
