Saint Stephen's Uniting Church, Sydney

Saint Stephen’s Uniting Church stands on Macquarie Street, facing Hyde Park, and is one of Sydney’s notable examples of interwar ecclesiastical architecture. Constructed between 1935 and 1937, the church was designed by architect John Reid in the Interwar Gothic Revival style as a replacement for the original Saint Stephen’s Church, which once stood on Phillip Street. Built from Pyrmont sandstone, the exterior blends traditional Gothic features—pointed arches, tracery windows, and a central tower—with the more streamlined geometry characteristic of 1930s design. The new church opened for worship in March 1935, even as construction continued on parts of the building through to completion.

The church interior reflects a synthesis of reverence and modernity. A vaulted ceiling, tall stained-glass windows, and finely carved timber furnishings create a sense of height and serenity, while the layout accommodates both congregational worship and musical performance. The pipe organ, built in 1934 by Hill, Norman & Beard, was purpose-made for this church and remains one of the most distinguished instruments of its kind in Australia. Its tonal richness complements the building’s superb acoustics, making the church a popular venue for recitals and choral concerts.

As part of the Uniting Church in Australia, Saint Stephen’s continues to play a significant role in Sydney’s spiritual and cultural life.
