Iulius Mall, Iasi
Iulius Mall is one of the most important modern commercial centers in the region and holds a special place in Romania’s retail history. Opened on 21 April 2000, it was Romania’s first modern mall outside Bucharest and was built with Gheorghe Asachi Technical University on the site of a former 12,000-square-meter student canteen.
When it first opened, the mall represented an investment of around 7 million US dollars and included approximately 130 stores across nearly 20,000 square meters of retail space. Strong demand quickly led to major expansion projects in 2005 and 2008. Expansions raised investment to about €22 million and doubled the mall to over 38,000 square meters, with more than 200 shops and services in a busy student district.
The mall also played a role in changing entertainment habits in Romania. In 2007, it became home to the first Cinema City multiplex in the country, introducing modern multiplex cinema standards to Romanian audiences. Today, it combines shopping, entertainment, and community use, including Iulius Meets, a free co-working and study space for students, freelancers, and remote workers.
