Jaffa Clock Tower, Tel Aviv

Jaffa Clock Tower, Tel Aviv (must see)

The Jaffa Clock Tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the historic district of Tel Aviv, marking the traditional gateway between the old port city of Jaffa and the surrounding neighborhoods. Built in 1903 during the late Ottoman period, the tower commemorated the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s reign. It was part of a wider initiative across the empire, and Jaffa’s version helped inspire the construction of more than a hundred similar clock towers, serving both as a practical timekeeper and a symbol of modernization.

Constructed from local limestone, the tower rises above a busy square that almost every visitor to Jaffa will pass through. Since its completion, it has marked the central point of the area, surrounded by historic buildings, the nearby beach, the Jaffa Flea Market, and a lively mix of shops, galleries, and restaurants. Architecturally, it combines European influences with Ottoman elements, featuring arched windows, decorative stonework, and four clock faces—two showing local Israeli time and two set to European time. During a renovation of the square in 2001, the tower itself was restored and topped with a small Russian-style turret.

While not the most imposing monument in the city, the clock tower’s prominence comes from its setting and history. Standing here, with the hum of the market, the scent of the sea nearby, and layers of history all around, visitors gain an immediate sense of Jaffa’s character.
