Mattozzi Restaurant & Pizzeria, Naples
Mattozzi Restaurant & Pizzeria carries forward one of the city’s longest-standing pizza traditions. The Mattozzi family belongs to a small group of Neapolitan pizza-making dynasties whose history stretches from the 19th century into the present day. Their story began more than 150 years ago with a restaurant and pizzeria in Largo Carità, now Piazza Salvo D’Acquisto. The roots of the business reach even further back to 1833, when the venue operated as “Le Stanze di Piazza Carità,” a meeting place frequented by local intellectuals, including literary critic Francesco De Sanctis. Today, under the guidance of Paolo Surace, the restaurant reflects a fourth generation of pizza-making tradition.
The restaurant’s atmosphere remains warm and approachable. Guests can dine on the terrace during warmer months or inside, where the simple décor and attentive service create a relaxed setting. The menu stays faithful to classic Neapolitan cooking, favouring continuity over constant change. Pizza is naturally a highlight, but seafood dishes and hearty pastas also reflect Naples’s culinary identity. Seasonal favourites include spaghetti with clams or mussels, while year-round staples such as Margherita pizza and pasta with potatoes and provolone showcase the comfort of traditional southern Italian cuisine.

Historical Churches
Christianity in general and the Catholic faith in particular have always played an important role in the social and cultural life of Naples. Not everyone knows that the city boasts the highest number of churches in the world – almost 500 historic “houses of God” (1,000 in total) – accumulated over the course of 17(!) centuries. Hence the nickname – “the city of 500 domes”.
