Max-Morlock-Stadion (Max-Morlock Stadium), Nuremberg

Max-Morlock-Stadion is Nuremberg’s best-known football stadium and the home ground of 1. FC Nuremberg. It opened in 1928 as the Municipal Stadium and originally held around 37,000 spectators. Designed by architect Otto Ernst Schweizer, the stadium was praised at the time as one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world. It has changed names several times and has been known as Max-Morlock-Stadion since 2017, honouring Max Morlock, one of the club’s greatest players and a member of West Germany’s 1954 World Cup-winning team.

During the Nazi era, the stadium became part of the regime’s political spectacle. The Hitler Youth used it as a parade ground for gatherings and marches, while the Nazi sports organization staged the fourth German Sports Festival here in 1934, one of its largest sporting events. Immediately after the Second World War, the US Army used the stadium as a sports field.

The stadium has undergone several renovations and modernization projects over the decades, improving facilities and sightlines for spectators. It hosted five matches during the 2006 FIFA World Cup and is occasionally used for large concerts.

For tourists, its location beside Zeppelin Field makes it an interesting stop when exploring Nuremberg’s former Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
