Mezquita del Albayzin (Albayzin Mosque), Granada

The Albayzin Mosque is a particularly interesting stop because it brings Granada’s Islamic history into the present. Opened in 2003, it was the first mosque built in Granada after the Christian conquest of 1492 and became an important spiritual and cultural center for the city’s Muslim community. Located in San Nicolás Square, in the historic Albayzín neighborhood, the mosque combines traditional Arabic architecture with influences from the Nasrid period.

The complex consists of three sections: a peaceful garden, the prayer hall, and a Center for Islamic Studies. The prayer hall features understated Islamic decoration, including a mihrab modeled on that of the Mosque of Córdoba, cedar panels hand-carved with Qur’anic verses, and marble panels inspired by those of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Its large qibla windows reproduce designs from Istanbul’s Blue Mosque. In the courtyard, Moroccan artisans from Fez recreated traditional fountains and mosaics using techniques associated with Muslim Granada a thousand years ago.

The minaret, with its distinctly Albayzin proportions, is another highlight, featuring a Kufic inscription bearing the Muslim declaration of faith beneath its eaves. Outside, the garden offers beautiful views toward the Alhambra and provides a quiet contrast to the crowds around San Nicolás.

More than a historic recreation, the mosque represents the return of a visible Muslim presence to Granada after more than five centuries, reflecting the Albayzín’s continuing identity as a living community.
