Monument to Ernest Augustus, Hanover

Monument to Ernest Augustus, Hanover

The Monument to Ernest Augustus in Hanover is a significant historical and cultural landmark. Ernest Augustus, born in 1771, ascended as the King of Hanover on June 20, 1837, following the death of his elder brother, William IV. He became king under unique circumstances: while his niece Victoria inherited the British throne, Ernest Augustus succeeded in Hanover due to Salic law, which barred women from succession. This event marked the end of the personal union between Britain and Hanover, which had been in place since 1714.

The monument itself, unveiled in 1861 by Ernest Augustus' son, Georg V, was crafted by Albert Wolff, a renowned German sculptor and medalist. It features an imposing equestrian statue of King Ernst August, dressed in a hussar uniform, symbolizing his royal stature and military affiliation. The statue, prominently placed in a square named after the king in front of Hanover Central Station, bears an inscription dedicating it to “the father of the nation from his loyal people” in German.

This monument is not just a piece of art; it has woven itself into the social fabric of Hanover. It's a popular rendezvous point, colloquially referred to as "unterm Schwanz" or “under the tail” of the horse, reflecting the statue's position and the local sense of humor. This phrase highlights the monument's role in everyday life in Hanover, serving as a familiar and iconic meeting spot for its residents.
