GOP Variete-Theater, Hanover

GOP Variete-Theater, Hanover

The GOP Varieté-Theater in Hanover holds a distinguished place in the cultural landscape with its storied past. Initially built as a commercial and office space named "Georgspalast" between 1912 and 1913, it later evolved into a jazz music hub by the 1920s, featuring concerts by famous orchestras. Despite facing operational challenges during wartime, it remained active until its destruction in bombings.

Reestablished in 1948 by Wilhelm Hirte, who also launched the Gondel Bar in the same location, the GOP Varieté-Theater rapidly became a central venue for notable singers, actors, and movie stars. The theater, which hosted magicians like Kalanag and celebrated figures such as Paul Hörbiger and Josephine Baker, was particularly renowned in the 1950s. Zarah Leander's 1960 performance stands out as a highlight, attracting large audiences.

The rise of television in the 1960s led to a decline in the theater's audience, resulting in its closure in 1962. It remained shut for three decades until its revival in December 1992. Now, it's a prominent platform for contemporary variety art, presenting a wide array of performances including acrobatics, magic, and unique comedy acts. Managed by Dennis Bohnecke and supported by a team of 120, the theater is committed to delivering top-notch entertainment.

Notably, it's the only venue in Germany that still has its original stage from the early 20th Century. Situated in central Hanover, it operates throughout the year, offering diverse entertainment every week. The theater also provides an array of dining options, making it a perfect spot for social gatherings and cultural enrichment. With a show program that updates bi-monthly, the GOP Varieté-Theater ensures a continually engaging experience for visitors.
