Staatsoper Hannover (Opera House), Hanover
The Hanover Opera House stands as one of the city’s principal cultural institutions, located on the eastern edge of the Old Town near the line of the former city walls. Built between 1845 and 1852, the building was designed in a late Classicist style to replace the earlier Royal Court Theatre. Its symmetrical façade, defined by a columned portico and balanced proportions, reflects the cultural ambitions of the Kingdom of Hanover. The first performance staged here was The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and from the outset, the venue hosted both opera and drama.
The original building was destroyed by bombing during World War II. A close replica reopened in 1950, preserving the historic exterior while introducing a postwar modernist interior, which was later updated with further renovations, including a major modernization in 1985. Today, the auditorium accommodates around 1,200 spectators and retains its traditional horseshoe layout, designed to provide clear sightlines and strong acoustics.
The opera house operates as a combined venue for opera, theatre, and ballet, with a continuous programme of performances throughout the year.
