Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, Naples

The Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is a 43-acre zoo and historic botanical garden in Naples. Originally established as a personal horticultural retreat by botanist and ornithologist Henry Nehrling in 1919, the site has since evolved into a nationally accredited zoo and conservation center.

After Nehrling’s passing in 1929, the gardens fell into neglect until Julius Fleischmann revitalized them in the 1950s, adding new plantings, lakes, pathways, and exotic birds before opening Caribbean Gardens to the public in 1954. A decade later, Larry and Jane Tetzlaff (better known as Jungle Larry and Safari Jane) introduced exotic animals to the garden in 1969, transforming it into the Naples Zoo.

The zoo is home to around 70 species, though not all are on display at any given time. Visitors can explore a mile-long path winding through the lush tropical setting, first planted over a century ago. One of its standout attractions is the Primate Expedition Cruise, where guests can observe primates living on islands within the park’s scenic lakes, an innovation dating back to Fleischmann’s redesign.

Throughout its history, the zoo has grown both in scope and influence. After the Fleischmann family decided to sell the land in 2002, a community-driven referendum in 2004 led to its purchase, securing the zoo’s future. By 2005, it became a nonprofit organization, managed by the Naples Zoo Board of Directors. Today, the zoo continues to expand its conservation initiatives, hosting over 350,000 visitors annually.

Unlike many other zoos, Naples Zoo operates without government funding, relying entirely on ticket sales, memberships, and donations. This support enables unique visitor experiences, such as giraffe feedings and encounters with rare species like the giant anteater. With a combination of wildlife, education, and history, Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens remains a premier destination blending conservation with recreation.
