North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, Tunis
The North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial is a cemetery located in Carthage, Tunisia, dedicated to the memory of American soldiers who lost their lives in the Second World War. It is the only American cemetery in North Africa and has 2,841 graves spread over 27 acres of land.
The cemetery is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission and has headstones set in neat rows, divided into nine sections by wide paths. There are decorative pools at the intersections, and the Wall of the Missing along the southeast border has 3,724 names engraved on it.
The chapel and the memorial court contain large maps in mosaic and ceramic depicting the operations and supply activities of American forces across Africa to the Persian Gulf and are designed to blend in with the local architecture. The chapel's interior is adorned with polished marble, flags, and sculpture.
Visitors can take a tour of the cemetery and learn about the history of the soldiers who fought in the North Africa campaign. Additionally, visitors should make sure to see the impressive mosaic on display at the administrative offices. The cemetery is open from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm.
