Pharmacy Museum, Bratislava

Pharmacy Museum, Bratislava

The Pharmacy Museum in Bratislava, situated in the historical Burgher’s House next to Saint Michael’s Gate, offers a unique glimpse into the evolution of pharmaceutical practice. The building itself, a Baroque structure with elements of Rococo in the stone entrance and a Classicist facade, has undergone multiple reconstructions, incorporating diverse architectural styles. Established in 1953, the museum features a rich collection of nearly 9,000 pharmaceutical artifacts and 3,000 volumes of pharmaceutical literature, highlighting the breadth and history of the field.

One of the museum's most notable exhibits is a meticulous reproduction of the “Red Crayfish” pharmacy, which originally operated within the building. This display includes historical pharmaceutical equipment dating back to the 16th century, as well as period-appropriate furniture and medicinal vessels. The museum’s ambiance is further enriched by Baroque paintings with healing themes adorning the walls and vaulted ceiling, enhancing the visitor's experience with a sense of historical continuity and artistic beauty.

Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by the original cast iron sign of the “Red Crayfish,” preserving the legacy of the pharmacy. Open year-round, the museum serves as an educational resource that spans the developments in pharmacy from the 16th century to the present day, making it a must-visit for those interested in the history of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences.
