Souk El Leffa, Tunis

Souk El Leffa, Tunis

Souk El Leffa is a marketplace located in the medina of Tunis, which is also known as the Souk of Djerbians because it was mainly occupied by merchants from the Tunisian island of Djerba. The souk is situated near the Ez-Zitouna Mosque and continues towards Souk Es Sekajine, which specializes in selling leather crafts. The souk was constructed in the early 17th century as part of an urban rehabilitation project between the Ez-Zitouna Mosque and the Kasbah.

The Souk El Leffa is famous for its wool products trading, thanks to merchants from Djerba Island, who trade wool woven products from their island and surrounding regions. Additionally, some craftsmen weave sefseri, a traditional Tunisian veil worn by women, at this souk.

The souk is covered with barrel vaults made of bricks, which allow for light and ventilation. The shops at the souk are raised about a meter in height using plates, which facilitates communication between visitors and merchants, as well as observation of goods. Compared to other souks in Tunis, the Souk El Leffa is known for its calm atmosphere.

Founded by Ottomans, Souk El Leffa is one of their first souks, marking a new era in the history of Tunisia. Nowadays, the souk's main activities include the trading of textiles, bed covers, clothing, shoes, and handicraft products.
