Souk El Attarine, Tunis

Souk El Attarine, Tunis

The Souk El Attarine, which means spice traders in Arabic, is a spice market found in many Arab countries in the Middle East. In the past, old cities were often divided into different sections based on what was sold, such as meat, fabrics, spices, and "attarine" referred to as the spice market. The Souk El Attarine was established in 1240 by a Hafsid dynasty sovereign.

Today, Souk El Attarine is one of the markets in Tunis, specializing in perfume and beauty products trading, particularly jasmine and rose water, as well as amber and henna. The souk is located near the Ez-Zitouna Mosque and can be accessed from different directions. Several historical monuments, including the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, Khaldounia ( the first modern school founded in Tunisia on December 22, 1896), a branch of the National Library of Tunisia, and Madrasa Hamzia (an educational institution built in the 20th century), can be found within the souk.
