Souk El Kmach (Souk des Etoffes), Tunis
Souk El Kmach is a significant marketplace in the medina of Tunis, where a variety of fabrics and textiles are sold. The souk was constructed in the 15th century under the orders of the Hafsid ruler Abou Amr Uthman, replacing the older Souk El Rammadine. Located adjacent to the western side of the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, the souk can be accessed through three doors, and it is surrounded by other souks. Souk El Attarine and Bab Souk El Kmach provide direct entry to the market.
The souk comprises three aisles separated by two rows of columns, and it is covered by longitudinal cradles, with some skylights that offer natural light. Notable landmarks within the souk include the madrasa Mouradiya ( an educational institution) and the building (Zawiya) of the savant Ibn Asfour. The market sells fabrics and textiles made in Tunisia as well as luxury products, such as silk and linen, that are imported specifically for sale.
