Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, West Palm Beach
Founded in 1893 as Mount Olive Baptist Church, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church holds a special place in West Palm Beach’s history. Not only was it the first public school for African Americans in Palm Beach County from 1894 to 1896, but it also served as a spiritual and educational hub for the local community.
In 1925, the church was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque Revival style, and with its striking towers and illuminated domes, it became an iconic landmark. Recognized for its architectural significance, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
Despite suffering significant damage from Hurricanes Frances and Wilma in the early 2000s, the congregation showed remarkable resilience. Today, the church’s beautiful stained-glass windows have been preserved with hurricane-proof glass, ensuring their protection for years to come.
