Villa Simonini, Lucca

Villa Simonini, Lucca

Villa Simonini (also known as Villa Simonetti) is an elegant Art Nouveau residence located on Viale Giusti, adjacent to Villa Del Magro. Built in the early 20th century during Lucca’s first phase of suburban expansion, it showcases the distinctive architectural style that emerged during this period, blending elegance with intricate decorative elements.

Originally, the villa featured a three-story structure, with the uppermost level partially terraced. A significant renovation in 1915-16 enclosed the terrace, creating additional interior spaces that seamlessly merged with the existing rooms. Further modifications followed, including new flooring on the ground level and the installation of a false ceiling in the small living room. Today, the villa is divided into three separate apartments, all under the same ownership.

Villa Simonini breaks from Lucca’s suburban norm with its distinct design. Two interconnected volumes are joined by a semi-cylindrical stairwell. The northwest corner stands out with curving balconies, ornate iron railings, and decorative brackets featuring botanical and spiral motifs. Gaetano Orzali’s designs also grace the wrought iron gates by Milan’s Sirtoli company and the glass canopy above the entrance.

The main façade directly faces Viale Giusti, offering a clear view of the historic city walls. Its lower portion is clad in marble, while the entrance is accentuated by a large glass and wrought iron canopy. The villa was once enclosed by a spacious garden, but during the Fascist era, parts of its original fencing were lost.

The villa’s highlight is a circular marble staircase with a dramatic vertical effect, enhanced by tripartite windows. Its wide steps are set into the wall with corbelled frames and paired with an elegant wrought iron railing. The top floor, remodeled in 1915-16, features simpler design elements, lower ceilings, and grit and cement flooring. A modern elevator was added without compromising the villa’s historic charm.

With its unique blend of Art Nouveau details, fine craftsmanship, and historical significance, Villa Simonini remains a testament to Lucca’s architectural evolution in the early 20th century.
