Volkstheater (The Folk Theater), Munich
Since its inception in 1983, the Volkstheater has been dedicated to preserving the legacy of traditional folk plays. In October 2021, the theater transitioned to a state-of-the-art venue situated in the bustling Schlachthofviertel, elevating its facilities to match the vibrant character of the district.
The venue's relocation to the historical Viehhof cattle yard on Tumblinger Strasse, within the same quarter, marked a significant upgrade. Its opening act was the play "Edward II," directed by the esteemed Christian Stückl. The move was prompted by the space constraints of their former location on Brienner Strasse, leading to the development of this new, advanced theater.
The building's design is the brainchild of the LRO architectural firm from Stuttgart, featuring a distinctive brick exterior that harmonizes with the site's historical buildings, subtly highlighting elements of its rich history. This innovative design positions the Volkstheater as one of the most modern theater spaces in Germany, while still honoring its historical context.
The theater is notable for its dynamic young troupe and audience, often spotlighting rising stars like Brigitte Hobmeier, Friedrich Mücke, and Maximilian Brückner, many of whom have gained fame in film and TV. Since 2002, the theater has also been hosting the Radikal Jung festival, which fosters young directorial talent, featuring award-winning plays from the German-speaking theater community.
