Avebury is world famous for its prehistoric landscape, but the other attractions of this picturesque Wiltshire village are often overlooked. Avebury has roots stretching back thousands of years, the stone circle and other monuments providing evidence that the area has been settled since Neolithic times. The village itself began to take shape in the Saxon era, and gradually expanded. By the 19th century houses had spread into Avebury Stone Circle, threatening the future of the stones.
The current layout owes much to archaeologist Alexander Keiller, who lived at Avebury Manor. He removed the houses within the henge, and created a new settlement at nearby Avebury Trusloe. Fortunately many historic buildings were preserved, including the manor house and a medieval church. Today Avebury remains a living community, complete with shops and an old thatched pub. ......
