Gare District Shopping Walk, Luxembourg

Gare District Shopping Walk (Self Guided), Luxembourg

The city of Luxembourg offers some superb shopping opportunities, with one of the best locations for bargains, fashions and luxury buys being the Gare district. This is situated around the central train station, a beautiful copper-topped building which was constructed in 1907. The shopping area is an exciting jumble of streets filled with shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafés. There are goods and items to suit all tastes and budgets.

You will probably spend a lot of your shopping time on the delightful Avenue de la Liberté. It is known for its trendy boutiques and has been voted the second most attractive shopping street in the world. Some visitors and residents consider it to be streets ahead of the Champs Elysées in Paris.

One of the other principle shopping areas near to the station is the Avenue de la Gare. Along its length, you can browse jewelry shops, fashion boutiques and stores selling electronic goods. Many of the items on this street can be purchased for a reasonable price. If you are not in the mood for shopping, the area is still a great place to hang out, especially on the attractive Avenue de la Liberté. Pull up a chair in a café, enjoy some refreshments and watch city life go by.

Luxembourg Introduction Walking Tour

The capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is known as Luxembourg City. The Romans had built small forts here that guarded two roads that passed through. But it was Count Seigfried in 963 who began the town by building a castle on the Bock promontory. A small church followed on the site of present day St. Michael’s Church. Soon a community sprang up along the Roman road.
