Church of San Gil and Santa Ana, Granada

The Church of San Gil and Santa Ana stands beside the Darro at the beginning of Darro Street, making it an ideal stop while walking between and the Albayzín. Built in the 16th century on the site of the former Aljama Almanzora mosque, it is one of Granada’s most elegant examples of Renaissance architecture blended with Mudéjar traditions.

The church was designed by the renowned local architect Diego de Siloé, who sought to create a building combining Christian imagery with elements inherited from Granada’s Islamic architectural tradition. Its magnificent Renaissance portal, carved by Sebastián de Alcántara in 1542, features three niches containing statues of saints, along with representations of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. Inside, the single nave is decorated with impressive carved-wood Mudéjar ceilings, reflecting the craftsmanship of the Moorish artisans who remained in Granada after the Christian conquest.

The church’s architecture illustrates the distinctive fusion that characterizes many of Granada’s historic churches: Renaissance forms and Christian decoration coexist with techniques and artistic traditions inherited from the Islamic city.

For tourists, San Gil and Santa Ana offer a compact lesson in Granada’s layered history. An Islamic mosque site became a Christian parish, Mudéjar craftsmanship survived within the new religious architecture, and Renaissance design transformed the building into one of the city’s most attractive churches. The church remains active and is also a popular wedding venue, particularly during the summer months.
