Danube Island, Vienna
The Danube Island, also known as Donauinsel, is a lengthy and relatively narrow island located in the heart of Vienna. This island spans a distance of 21.1 kilometers (approximately 13.1 miles) in length, with a width ranging from 70 to 210 meters (230 to 689 feet). The New Danube watercourse essentially resembles an elongated lake suitable for swimming, and it is technically considered a floodplain.
It has earned the nickname "autobahn for swimmers" because it is commonly used by people who swim to get to work. For most tourists, the island is recognized as a leisure destination with numerous bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. The island offers a wide range of sports activities, including rollerblading, cycling, swimming, and canoeing. One particular beach on the island was initially so distinctive that it earned the playful moniker "Copa Cagrana," in jest of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana. Kagran, a district within Vienna's 22nd District, is situated adjacent to this beach. Additionally, both the southern and northern sections of the island feature extensive and free nude beaches.
The Donauinselfest is an internationally renowned annual open-air festival, and it holds the distinction of being the largest event of its kind in Europe, attracting more than 3 million attendees. This festival typically takes place at the end of June, spanning from Friday through Sunday, although there was an exception in 2008 when it occurred from September 5th to 7th due to Austria (and Switzerland) hosting the European Football Championship. On September 23, 2008, Madonna performed her first concert in Austria at this festival, captivating a crowd of 57,000 spectators.
